Mastodon Announces New EU Non-Profit

The new entity aims to provide stewardship for the project.

The Mastodon project is continuing to grow and evolve. As the organization continues to take shape and raise funds, key members of the project have decided to transition several parts of the project to a new Non-Profit organization, to better reflect their ideals.

This new organization will retain ownership of the Mastodon brand and copyright, along with platform components and other assets. One aspect worth noting here is that CEO Eugen Rochko will likely be transitioning away from CEO into a new role that allows him to better focus on software development.

Much of the project’s current scope and goals will remain the same, such as daily operation of mastodon.social and mastodon.online, as well as FediDiscovery development. The project aims to raise an operating budget of €5 Million in 2025, which is a daunting goal for any open source project.
