Mastodon
Mastodon is an open source microblogging platform most often compared to Twitter. Started in 2016, Mastodon is largely funded by donations and an ongoing crowdfunding campaign via Patreon. The platform is often considered a major contributing factor to the growth of the Fediverse over the past seven years.
