Welcome to the Decentered Podcast

The next step of our journey

TL;DR: We’ve been hard at work over the past few months to launch a dedicated podcast under the We Distribute banner. We’ve interviewed a lot of really interesting people trying to solve a variety of problems, from user safety to content discovery to bespoke crafted experiences. We talk to people about their stories, what brought them here, what they’re building, and ultimately: their vision of what’s possible.

Happy New Year, Dear Readers!

We’re thrilled to announce the covert launch of our podcast, Decentered. After a soft launch of the first episode, we were met with an overwhelmingly positive reception, filled with excitement and well-wishes. Thank you for your support!

Why are you doing a podcast?

Although it looks like this is a sudden launch, we originally started putting plans together for a podcast back in August. We Distribute is still a volunteer effort, and this was our first attempt. It took way longer than we initially expected, but we’ve been putting a huge effort in because we think it’s important.

The decentralized social web has expanded and evolved since we first started writing about the space nearly 8 or 9 years ago. We now find ourselves at a precipice where millions of people are using the Fediverse, and potentially millions more may soon come into the fold over the next few years. Aside from companies, a lot of individuals are launching some really incredible projects that aren’t like anything we’ve seen before in the space.

We wanted to put together a podcast that was friendly, loose, and informal. It’s a way for us to get together with people building the future of the Internet, swap stories, and laugh together. It’s an opportunity for the builders to tell their stories, share their visions, and tap into the potential of what’s possible.

Chatting with Chris Trottier in a video! If you look, the unedited talk is nearly two hours long.

Our podcast format allows us to delve deeper, connecting intimately with our audience and guests. We aim to present their stories in meaningful ways. It’s hard work, but it’s also incredibly fun and rewarding. Our goal is to provide top-quality, engaging content that entertains, informs, and creates a positive vibe.

The Social Web Revolution

The social web is at a pivotal point. For over 15 years, a few giants have dominated the digital social sphere with their algorithms and advertising partners. The landscape is changing! The acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk and the rise of generative AI have sparked a movement.

Users are migrating to platforms like Bluesky and the Fediverse, shining a new light on the social web. Even companies like Flipboard, Medium, and Mozilla are joining this shift, empowering people to take control of their digital lives.

We aim to be a bridge connecting admins, developers, designers, and others to the broader digital world. There are incredible projects emerging daily, and we’re excited to highlight and share these innovations.

We’re not just about in-depth reporting, featured articles, and reviews. We’re also embracing other mediums, like our We Distribute PeerTube channel. Here, we’ll share snippets, full episodes of Decentered, and updates on other exciting projects.
