About

Welcome to We Distribute, a publication dedicated to Free Software, decentralized communication technologies, and sustainability. This is a guerrilla publication developed by Sean Tilley (@deadsuperhero), developed to broadcast news to the Fediverse and other parts of the Free Network.

Despite the fresh coat of (sloppily-applied) paint, this project is actually somewhat old, starting around 2014/2015 as a series of articles on Medium, and real-time news bulletins posted across the federated social web. These days, we’re running our own self-hosted operations, and you can actually subscribe to our blog directly from fediverse microblogging clients. The goal is to get this publication to a point where any fediverse platform can subscribe to it seamlessly.

I don’t understand what any of this means?

Put simply, this is a blog about technology designed to empower individual people to cut out the middleman (Facebook, Microsoft, Google, etc) and own their computing experience, from the social networks all the way down to the operating system and BIOS. We are here to highlight the development of a better, more open, more democratic Internet that isn’t tightly controlled by a handful of corporate entities.

We’ve arrived at a point in the development of computer technologies where, despite their prevalence, the products you can’t crack open and examine aren’t actually all that necessary anymore. Many great alternatives exist to the platforms that spy on you and sell your personal data for profit, most of which are developed collaboratively by passionate volunteers, out in the open.

We Distribute is here to promote these initiatives, as we believe that these technologies may eventually turn the tide against surveillance capitalism and centralized corporate entities in general.

How do you make money?

Currently, we don’t. No advertisements, no data-selling schemes, no umbrella entities over our heads. We may eventually consider accepting donations through something like Patreon or LibrePay, but none of that has been decided on yet. For now, the editor has a day-job and writes articles in his spare time for free.
