Introducing The Mixtape – Hot Music from Radio Free Fedi

This week, we’re starting a new tradition: sharing some of our favorite tracks broadcasted on Radio Free Fedi. What’s that, you ask? It’s an independent, volunteer-run online radio featuring only music created by members of the Fediverse. RFF has permission directly from the creators of each song to broadcast them. As regular listeners over here at We Distribute, we wanted to share our favorites.

Without further ado, here’s our first playlist!

Mixtape #1 – Hot, Hot Summer

The summer of 2023 is shaping up to have some of the highest temperatures on record. Granted, the reason for that isn’t so great, but here’s some jams to stay cool and keep the existential crisis away!

Higher” – Allflowers

Higher is one of the more energetic and hopeful songs on Allflower’s debut album, More or Less Forever. The band is based out of Paris, France, and I think this is one of their best. The squealing guitar clashing with the vocals is wonderful.

easter island” – RX1F

RX1F presents a trippy, synth-tastic rock ballad featuring visions of easter island heads. I definitely get a neon 1980’s synth-rock vibe every time I listen to it. Absolutely delicious.

Solarpunk Grazers” – Key 13

Haunting vocal melodies contrast against relaxed instrumentals and psychedelic sonic elements. It sounds equal parts utopian and punk at the same time? It’s a very unique sound.

Remember” – Romeo Rucha

Short, but sweet. It’s a strange noise collage combining an imitation of The Movie Voice Guy saying vaguely inspirational things, while an unnerving electronic track plays under it. I thought it was awesome.

We Created the Sky” – INS/OVR

INS/OVR describes themselves as “a blend of progressive and electro house sounds with chiptune influences”, and the resulting sound is intriguing. We were going to save this one for a future mixtape, but it honestly slaps.

Crafty Creatures” – Soundblasted

This track is a bouncy, retro piece of piano house that’s absolutely fun to drive around to. The layers and layers that gradually get added to the hook make for an extremely compelling earworm.

Magenta” – Xenophorium

You might define this track as “Vaporwave” or “Electronic”, but it falls somewhere in between, with experimental distortions and artful inclusion of choral and orchestral sound. Definitely a track to get lost in.

All By Myself With You” – bgm

A sweet, nostalgic electric-acoustic riff that’s equal parts sweet and sad. It feels like summer rain on a vacation day.

Sympathy” – Unbuilt Boy

This track absolutely rocks. It feels like the product of several generations at once, sliding effortlessly from 90’s to 2010’s to 70’s. It feels like a delicious combination of low-fi grunge, mixed with angsty alternative and pop rock.

The album "Unimaginable You" by Deanna Troy

Audacious Truths” – Deanna Troy

Also known as “Never Get it Right”, this song opens up with a rich, dark sound as guitar strings pluck into the night. I’m unashamed that I had this on repeat for a while. Sad, beautiful, and wistful.
